1 Week to SIGGRAPH Asia!

Woahhh, just 1 week to SIGGRAPH Asia in Kobe, Japan!



With record-breaking number of programs at SIGGRAPH Asia this year in Japan, there seem to have so much to do, so little time!

After missing out last year in Shenzhen, Pixar Animation Studio returns with a strong presence at SIGGRAPH Asia this year with  at least two sessions every day from 2 to 5 November 2015.

What went on at SIGGRAPH 2015?

SIGGRAPH 2015 held in downtown LA, is a five-day interdisciplinary educational experience in the latest computer graphics and interactive techniques including a three-day commercial exhibition that attracts hundreds of exhibitors showcasing the latest technologies and innovations from around the world.


SIGGRAPH 2015 attracted more than 14,800 participants from over 70 countries to Los Angeles. 

The keynote presentation was delivered by MIT Media Lab Director, Joichi "Joi"Ito, on science as a gateway to the new digital frontier. 

Emerging Technologies showcased the latest interactive and graphics technologies in the 3D, virtual reality and projection mapping industries - a collaboration of science, technology and art.

On the business side, Paris-based VideoStitch has revealed real-time 3600 degree 3D video stitching. 360 degree video is set to become a major part of the virtual reality (VR) industry as the technology heads towards the consumer market. Read more

Maxon showcased their Cinema 4D R17 and presented the new features across modelling, sculpting and animation to 3D artists and animators for the first time. (Source)

Public beta of Zync, Google's Cloud Platform cloud-native rendering solution was announced. Artists will get access to 1,600 dedicated Compute Engine cores to power V-Ray, Arnold and Nuke-based renders. Google has also announced Pixar's Renderman intergration with Zync by Google Cloud Platform. (Source)

In their blog, Unity3D / Unity Technologies said that "SIGGRAPH has historically been the first place to see the latest advances in graphics and this year is no exception." In addition to SIGGRAPH, Unity will continue their presence at SIGGRAPH Asia - the Asian edition of SIGGRAPH which will be held in Kobe, Japan from 2 to 5 November 2015.

Studio Ghibli's Hayao Miyazaki works on new CG Animation

Hayao Miyazaki is trying to make a short with CG to screen at the Ghilbli Museum. He said "I intend to work until the day I die. I retired from feature-length films but not from animation. Self-indulgent animation," he said at the time in reference to his short films for the Ghilbli Museum. Read more here.

Take a closer look at the storytelling techniques of Hayao Miyazaki, one of Japan's greatest animation directors.

If you are attending largest Computer Graphics event in Asia, SIGGRAPH Asia, in Kobe, Japan in November 2015, do take the opportunity to visit Ghilbli Museum in Tokyo. Tokyo is just 160 minutes direct train ride by Shinkansen  (Japan's high-speed train). Imaging exploring the world of Hayao Miyazaki and the strange buildings which often appear in his films.

gamescom Cologne - Next Level of Entertainment

Happening from 5 to 9 August; gamescom is the world's largest computer and video game event with a total area of 193,000 gross square meters of exhibit space. Find out who are exhibiting.



Square Enix, IP owner of FINAL FANTASY, DRAGON QUEST and TOMB RAIDER, has announced its lineup of titles for gamescom. Read on. The publisher together with its peers from Oculus Story Studio,  Activision Blizzard, SEGA, etc., will be presenting a workshop on "R&D in the Video Game Industry" at SIGGRAPH Asia which will be held from 2 - 5 November in Kobe, Japan.
